President Akufo-Addo has made a resolute pledge that the 2024 elections will be etched in the annals of history as a benchmark of transparency and fairness, surpassing all previous polls since the nation gained independence.
President Akufo-Addo has pledged that the government will fulfill its duty to ensure the upcoming elections are conducted in a peaceful and secure environment, with total transparency and adherence to the country’s electoral laws .
“I came out from a peaceful election, and I will leave in a peaceful election,” the President said.
“As far as the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is concerned, a party born from the noble Dankwa, Dombo and Busia political tradition, which spearheaded the national resistance to authoritarian one-party rule in the country, rigging is not part of our DNA,” he added.
Yesterday, at the Wesley Cathedral in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo made a declaration while speaking at the 51st annual and 13th biennial conference of the Methodist Church Ghana, stating:
“We have been eternal democrats, we trust and accept freely, judgement of the people”, he said, adding that “my response to the unfavourable verdicts of 2008 and 2012 is there for all to see”.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) key to success in the upcoming elections lies in its impressive eight-year track record in government, combined with the visionary leadership of Vice-President and flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has outlined a clear plan for Ghana’s future.
This message was delivered during the Methodist Church Ghana’s conference, themed “Discipleship: Growing into Christian maturity.”
The President voiced his trust in the security agencies’ capability to fulfill their duties and guarantee a peaceful electoral process, where the citizens’ choices and decisions on national leadership would be respected and protected from violence and coercion, truly reflecting the will of the people.
“It is the free will of the Ghanaian people, not the will of any candidate or political party, no matter how desperate he or she is for power, will prevail on December 7, 2024,” he added.
President Akufo-Addo stated that Ghana values its standing as a shining example of democracy in Africa and is committed to upholding this reputation through the successful execution of the upcoming elections, which will further solidify its position as a model of democratic excellence.
“I am certain that the behaviour of the people, the government and public authorities will put to shame all the naysayers, all the Jeremiahs, including unfortunately some persons of the cloth who instead of preaching peace are bent on raising false alarm about election rigging and Kenyan-style bloodletting,” he said, adding that “they would be disappointed.”
President Akufo-Addo praised the Methodist Church of Ghana for its significant contributions to the country’s progress in areas like education, healthcare, and social welfare.
He emphasized the crucial role of Christian discipleship in shaping a nation’s moral values, noting that it’s a collective responsibility that requires support and encouragement among believers.
The President also highlighted the Church’s prophetic duty to speak truth to power, urging all to boldly condemn injustice, corruption, and moral decadence, guided by biblical principles.
“Our advocacy should be rooted in biblical principles, aimed at promoting the common good,” he said, adding that the Church must support policies and initiatives that aligned with God’s will for justice and peace.
