Arsenal has bolstered its midfield with the signing of Spanish international Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad on a four-year deal, with a one-year extension option, in a transfer worth an initial £27.4 million plus £4.2 million in potential add-ons.
Following Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, Mikel Merino has finalized his move to Arsenal, joining the North London club after being a priority target throughout the summer transfer window.
“Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.
“Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality.
“As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”
Mikel Merino has joined Arsenal as the club’s fourth signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori, and Tommy Setford .
Merino brings valuable experience and versatility to Arsenal’s midfield, having previously played in the Premier League with Newcastle in 2018.
He also has extensive experience with Real Sociedad, making 242 appearances, and has played for Borussia Dortmund.
Additionally, Merino has earned 28 caps for Spain, scoring a crucial goal in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany, showcasing his ability to perform on the biggest stage.
