LaLiga’s Atletico Madrid has acquired England midfielder Conor Gallagher, 24, from Premier League’s Chelsea on a five-year contract, the two clubs announced on Wednesday.
Gallagher, a Chelsea youth academy product since age eight, has inked a deal with Atletico until 2029, with the transfer fee reportedly set at 42 million euros, according to media sources.
“We wish Conor the very best as he begins a new chapter in his career,” Chelsea said in an official announcement published in their website.
Conor Gallagher began his senior career with loan stints at West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before finally making his Chelsea debut in 2022.
Last season, he established himself as a key player, starting 37 Premier League games and serving as club captain for most of the campaign due to injuries to other players.
With only one year remaining on his Chelsea contract, Gallagher had been offered a new deal by the club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca.
Additionally, Gallagher has earned 18 caps for England since his debut in 2021 and represented the team at Euro 2024, where they finished as runners-up to Spain.
Atletico Madrid will introduce Conor Gallagher and their other new signings, including former Manchester City player Julian Alvarez, at a fan event at the Metropolitano stadium later on Wednesday.
This unveiling comes after Atletico’s significant spending spree, which has totaled around 200 million euros with the additions of Spain’s Robin Le Normand and Norway’s Alexander Sorloth.
Following a lackluster start to the LaLiga season with a 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Monday, Atletico is set to host Girona, last season’s surprise team, on Sunday.
