PARIS, FRANCE – An Australian hockey player competing in the Olympics has been taken into custody in Paris after being accused of purchasing cocaine, according to the public prosecutor’s office.
The athlete, whose name and team membership have not been disclosed, was arrested on Tuesday evening in the 9th district of Paris, along with a suspected cocaine dealer. No charges have been brought against the athlete at this time.
The incident comes as a shock given the Australian hockey teams’ proud history in the Olympics. The men’s team, known as the Kookaburras, has won two gold medals and three bronze medals, while the women’s team, known as the Hockeyroos, has won two gold medals and two bronze medals.
Both teams were knocked out of the 2024 Paris Olympics earlier this week, marking an early exit from the competition. Despite their recent setback, the Australian hockey teams have a rich history of achievement in the Olympics and will look to bounce back in future competitions.
The Australian Olympic Committee has not yet commented on the incident.
