Accra base radio host and reggae artist Blakk Rasta, has expressed skepticism about the decision to burn confiscated cannabis, cocaine, and other illicit drugs at Osu Beach.
He questioned the logic behind choosing this location, citing concerns about the environmental impact of open burning. On his 3FM radio show “Black Pot” on Friday, August 9, 2024, Blakk Rasta criticized the authorities’ decision, calling it ill-advised.
He argued that a proper incinerator should have been used instead of open burning, which can harm the environment and potentially harm marine life and birds.Blakk Rasta also wondered why Ghana chose to destroy the contraband instead of selling it to countries where it is legal.
He emphasized his strong disapproval, stating that if he were in charge of Accra, he would have taken legal action against the police and security agencies involved. The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) carried out the court-ordered destruction of seized drugs at Osu Beach on Thursday.
The operation involved burning 242 sacks of marijuana, 16 kilograms of cocaine, and buckets of heroin, which were confiscated during high-seas operations between 2020 and 2024.
However, Blakk Rasta’s criticism highlights the ecological risks of open burning, which can release toxic fumes into the environment. He stressed that a proper incinerator would have been a more appropriate method for destroying the seized drugs.
