The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has rejected President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s claim that the struggle for Ghana’s independence was a collective effort, implying that there is no single founder of the country.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 4, 2024, the CPP described the President’s claim as “unfounded” and an attempt to “whitewash the history of this country for its own parochial interests.”
“The whole world knows who the Osagyefo is, and that he Founded this country and named it Ghana, after the old Ghana Empire, on the eve of our independence of 6th March 1957,” the CPP stated.
“This was after countless attempts were made by the antecedents of the NPP, made up of Dr. J.B. Danquah and other elements of the UP tradition, to stop Ghana from gaining independence.”
The CPP accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of trying to distort history and undermine Nkrumah’s legacy, citing a recent incident where the President referred to former President John Dramani Mahama as his vice.
“It would have been thought His Excellency would have been more selective with his words, in these last days of the NPP administration,” the party said.
The CPP vowed to continue defending Nkrumah’s progressive vision and legacy, stating that no amount of rejection by any individual or party can change the fact that he is the founder of Ghana.
“Ghanaians will continue to defend The Osagyefo and his progressive vision, and no amount of rejection by any individual, party, or foreign neo-colonialist element can stop it,” the party declared.
The party also expressed confidence that Ghanaians will reject the NPP government at the polls in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections due to its “bad and hardship-propagating policies and corruption.”
“What will be resoundly rejected due to its bad and hardship propagating policies and corruption, is the NPP Government at the Polls, come 7th December 2024,” the CPP said.
