Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has outlined a comprehensive sports development plan aimed at transforming Ghana’s sports sector.
Speaking at a recent event, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of sports in promoting youth development, national pride, and economic growth.
The plan includes the establishment of a Sports Development Secretariat, which will oversee the development of sports infrastructure, grassroots programs, and collaboration with international sports bodies.
Dr. Bawumia also promised to upgrade existing stadiums, including those in Kumasi, Accra, and Sekondi, to meet international standards.
Furthermore, the NPP flagbearer pledged to continue the construction of AstroTurf pitches in every constituency, which they have increased from 3 to over 150 by 2024.
He also announced the introduction of the “Olympics Glory” program, aimed at preparing Ghanaian athletes for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA.
Dr. Bawumia also addressed the need to support the revival of the Premier League, improve commercial viability, and create jobs in the sports sector.
He proposed directing funds from the National Lottery Authority and the Gaming Commission to establish a sports employment module, assisting Premier clubs with operational expenses, including player remuneration and purchasing of buses for all premier League clubs.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia promised to build six-capacity stadiums in the six new regions and a standard stadium in sunyani, recognizing the region’s passion for football and numerous clubs.
He emphasized the importance of promoting school sports through the establishment of a Ghana School Sports Federation, creating more opportunities for young people and positioning Ghana as a hub for sports excellence.
Dr. Bawumia’s comprehensive sports development plan has been welcomed by sports enthusiasts and stakeholders, who see it as a bold step towards transforming Ghana’s sports sector and unlocking the potential of young Ghanaians.
