The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding its officers accountable for any electoral misconduct, ensuring that they face the full force of the law.
This pledge comes in the wake of concerns raised about unauthorized voter transfers discovered during the review of the provisional voters register.
An investigation revealed that voters from two polling stations in Tamale South and one polling station in Sagnarigu were transferred without their consent to the Pusiga constituency in the Upper East region, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the process.
According to the law, voters must be present in person to request a transfer of their registration to a different polling station, with verification of their identity through facial recognition or fingerprints. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, emphasized this requirement at a press conference in Accra on Monday.
“The transfer of vote can only be done at the district offices and requires the presence of the voter which must be verified using either his or her face or fingerprints,” he said.
Initial investigations revealed that affected voters claimed their voter ID cards were taken by Haruna Muniru, who allegedly used them as collateral for a loan without their knowledge or consent.
Haruna Muniru, arrested and released on bail, is accused of using an EC official’s credentials to illegally transfer the votes of 38 individuals.
