Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah has been elected as the Convention People’s Party (CPP) presidential candidate for the December 7 general election, following the party’s election process.
She secured 763 votes, defeating her rival Nana Yaw Frimpong, who garnered 586 votes.
The election saw a total of 1,360 votes cast, with 11 being invalid. The Electoral Commission has officially declared Kumankumah as the party’s flagbearer-elect for the upcoming general election.
Following her win, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah delivered a victory speech, emphasizing the importance of unity within the party to achieve success in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
She urged her supporters and party members to come together and work towards a common goal.
“In every election, one person will emerge as the winner, and it is essential for everyone to stand together to ensure unity and cohesion,” she stated. “I thank all who voted for me and even those who did not. My win was decisive and represents the voice of the masses.”
The runner-up, Nana Yaw Frimpong, who garnered 586 votes, declined to concede defeat and congratulate Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah on her win.
Instead, he leveled allegations of vote-buying, claiming that the election was tainted by irregularities and casting a shadow over the legitimacy of the outcome.
“How can I congratulate someone when the election was not free and fair? I have spent three years campaigning across the country, only to see someone who allegedly bought votes win the election. I believe I am the chosen candidate, but the people were influenced to vote against me with payments of 1,000 to 1,200 Cedis,” Frimpong claimed.
Clutching her victory, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah shifted her attention to the bigger prize, affirming that her priority lies in defeating the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections, rather than dwelling on internal party disputes.
