Ghana’s national armwrestling team, Golden Arms, is set to compete in the 2024 World Armwrestling Championship in Chisinau, Moldova, from August 15 to 25.
The team consists of renowned athletes, including double gold medalists and African champions Grace Minta, Edward Yamoah Asamoah, Blessing Abeka Nunoo, and Godwin Sackey. Led by Ghana Armwrestling Federation President Charles Osei Asibey, the team will depart on August 15.
In an interview with GNA Sports, Osei Asibey mentioned that securing funding posed a significant challenge in their preparation for the international competition.
“Participating in world events builds capacity and the confidence of our athletes; so in as much as we are disappointed with the numbers, we also take solace in the fact that we will use this championship to give our athletes and officials the needed exposure,” he said.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, led by Mr. Mustapha Ussif, the federation’s board, and the athletes for their support.
The Ghanaian team will be accompanied by officials Nii Otoo Larkyne, Husseini Akuetteh Addy, and Abigail Fremah.
The 2024 World Armwrestling Championship, hosted by the Moldovan National Sports Federation of Armwrestling (FNSARM) under President Alexandru Grumeza and General Secretary Anna Balanciuc, is expected to be the largest gathering of armwrestlers worldwide, with over 1,500 participants, officials, and fans from more than 60 countries attending.
