Coach Pedro Goncalves of Angola criticized the poor state of the Baba Yara Stadium pitch after his team’s 1-0 win against Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers, expressing his unhappiness with the playing conditions.
The subpar pitch conditions at Baba Yara Stadium hindered the match, making ball control a challenge for both Angola and Ghana, leading to numerous turnovers and a disjointed game rhythm, according to Coach Goncalves’ critique.
“We always tried to play football, but the pitch was difficult,” Goncalves said.
“A country like Ghana deserves a better stadium, a better pitch for football. They have such talented players,”he added.
In a dramatic turn of events, Felicio Milson scored a late winner in injury time for Angola, exploiting a defensive mistake by Ghana to secure a 1-0 victory and shatter the Black Stars’ impressive 24-year undefeated streak at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Ghana’s defeat has put them in a precarious position in Group F, made even more challenging by Sudan’s win over Niger.
The Black Stars must now regroup and focus on their upcoming match against Niger on Monday, September 9th, in Morocco, where a win is crucial to get their campaign back on track.
