Nana Takyi Poku Gyimah, the Chief of Yefri in the Nkoranza North Constituency of the Bono East Region, has defended the double track system implemented during the initial phase of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, criticizing those who opposed the policy.
He launched a scathing attack on critics of the double track system, dismissing their concerns as unfounded and illogical, especially now that they are trying to sell a 24-hour economy idea to Ghanaians.
According to Nana Takyi Poku Gyimah, a respected educationist with the Ghana Education Service, the Free SHS policy has led to a significant surge in school enrollment, prompting the government to implement innovative solutions, such as the double track system, to address the resulting challenges.
Nana Takyi Poku Gyimah revealed that the double track system was introduced to optimize limited resources, following a significant increase in student enrollment due to the Free SHS policy.
He made these comments during a courtesy visit from NPP Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at his palace on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
Although the double track system proved useful, critics unfairly maligned it as a sign of poor planning by policymakers and implementers.
Ironically, these same critics now advocate for a 24-hour economy, where citizens would work around the clock in shifts, despite previously condemning the similar double track system.
According to the Chief, it’s illogical for those who failed to recognize the ingenuity of the double track system to now champion the “24-hour economy” cause.
“It is therefore not surprising that they have, till date, not been able to explain to Ghanaians what they really mean by a 24-hour economy.”
The Chief praised the NPP government for bringing development to his area and specifically lauded Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the party’s 2024 Running Mate, for his bravery and vision in implementing the Free SHS policy as Education Minister.
He commended Dr. Opoku Prempeh for introducing the double track system, noting that such courageous leadership is necessary to tackle the country’s numerous challenges.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed gratitude to the Chief for acknowledging the NPP government’s achievements and encouraged him and his people to continue supporting the party.
He solicited their backing for Dr. Bawumia’s innovative solutions for Ghana’s progress and urged them to vote overwhelmingly for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Jacqueline Boatemaa Bonsu, in the Nkoranza North Constituency.
