Asante Kotoko emerged victorious in the first-ever Democracy Cup, organized by the Parliament of Ghana. The Porcupine Warriors defeated Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday 17th July 2024, claiming the coveted trophy.
In a historic twist, the victorious Kotoko team would be playing a friendly match against DC United, a top-tier American soccer club, in Washington, D.C., USA as part of their prize.This exciting opportunity marks a significant milestone in Ghanaian football.
The Democracy Cup, initiated by the Parliament of Ghana, aimed to promote unity, peace, and democratic values through football. The tournament featured the top two giants in Ghanaian football with Kotoko emerging as the champions.
In a curtain-raiser match, Members of Parliament played a friendly game against a team of Ex-Black Stars players, with the former winning 3-1. The match showcased the sporting prowess of Ghana’s lawmakers and set the tone for the exciting finale.
Kotoko took the lead in the first half through Justice Blay’s penalty kick. Hearts equalized in the 51st minute with a header from Asamoah Afriyie, but Kotoko restored their lead in the 62nd minute with a terrific strike from Peter Amidu.

The upcoming match against DC United is yet to be scheduled for for a date at the Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
