The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has clarified that the party’s demand for a forensic audit of the voter register for the 2024 general elections is not motivated by personal animosity towards the Electoral Commission (EC) commissioners.
Mahama explained that the NDC’s demand for a forensic audit of the voter register is aimed at safeguarding the register’s credibility and ensuring that the electoral process accurately reflects the will of the people.
“Our issues with the Electoral commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issues with the Electoral Commission are because we want peace during and after the election so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process,” he said.
During his Accra campaign tour, former President Mahama emphasized that constant pressure is key to ensuring the commission’s accountability and competence.
Mahama urged all Ghanaians to join the NDC’s September 17 protest, aimed at compelling the Electoral Commission to conduct an independent forensic audit of the voter register.
During a 3FM radio interview, Imani Africa’s Franklin Cudjoe added his voice to the mounting pressure on the Electoral Commission to conduct a comprehensive forensic audit of the voter register.
Franklin Cudjoe reasoned that the EC has everything to gain and nothing to lose by conducting a forensic audit, making it a prudent decision to ensure transparency.
Franklin Cudjoe expressed total distrust in the Electoral Commission, citing consistent Afrobarometer reports that rank the EC among the most mistrusted public institutions in Ghana.
According to Dr. Bossman Asare, the push for a forensic audit is unwarranted, as it implies a much larger issue with voter register bloating than the EC has found to be the case.
