Nana Yaw Frimpong, a flagbearer aspirant of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming December 7 election. This comes after he lost the party’s primaries, securing 586 votes out of 1,360 cast.
Speaking to the press,Nana Yaw Frimpong refused to concede defeat and congratulate his opponent, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah, instead alleging vote-buying and irregularities in the election process.
“How can I congratulate someone when the election was not free and fair?” he asked. “I believe I am the chosen candidate, but the people were influenced to vote against me with payments of 1,000 to 1,200 Cedis.”
Frimpong emphasized that the December 7 election is about choosing the best leaders for Ghana, not just about the CPP.
“December 7 election, will not be a CPP election that it will be a Ghana election and I’m for Ghana. I will look for an alternative way of serving mother Ghana, an alternative way of projecting my ideas,” he said.
This development highlights the growing trend of independent candidates in Ghana’s elections.
The public has reacted with mixed views, praising Frimpong’s commitment to Ghana’s development while questioning his loyalty to the CPP.
Nonetheless, his move demonstrates the democratic spirit and desire for change in Ghana’s political landscape.
In contrast, Nana Frimpomaa Kumankumah emphasized the importance of unity within the party to achieve success in the upcoming 2024 general elections in her victory speech.
