The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to stage a nationwide protest on September 17, 2024, if the Electoral Commission (EC) fails to rectify alleged irregularities in the voter register before the December 7 general election.
After submitting presidential nomination forms, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia expressed concerns to the media on Monday, September 9, 2024, about “numerous discrepancies” found in the voter register, raising alarm about the register’s integrity.
Asiedu Nketia stated that the NDC had officially complained to the Electoral Commission (EC) about the issues, but despite promises from the EC, no tangible steps had been taken to address the problems.
Asiedu Nketia cautioned that the credibility of the forthcoming elections would be seriously undermined if the Electoral Commission (EC) neglects to address the voter register discrepancies.
“Is it possible for a district officer anywhere to transfer names of voters to places they didn’t choose? And they are saying it is possible. If it is possible, then we are not safe,” he remarked.
Asiedu Nketia demanded a comprehensive audit of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) IT systems, revealing that the NDC has secured potential funding from international development partners who are willing to support such an audit.
Regarding the submission of presidential nomination forms, Asiedu Nketia expressed confidence that the NDC had fulfilled all necessary requirements, and he was optimistic that their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, would successfully complete the nomination process without any hurdles.
“We are very confident of the eligibility of our candidate,” he said.
The Electoral Commission Chair, Jean Mensah, has received presidential nomination forms from three candidates so far: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, independent candidate Nana Kwame Bediako, and Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana.
