The Ghanaian government has intensified its efforts to combat illegal mining, deploying over 100 soldiers to flush out illegal miners from water bodies and forest areas. This move aims to protect the country’s natural resources and restore the environment.
Led by Colonel Eric Tenadu, the “Operation Halt 2” task force has begun its operation in the Eastern Region. On Thursday, the team seized and demobilized three chanfan machines along the Birim River.
These machines, used for extracting gold, were destroyed as part of the operation. In total, 18 changfang and 10 water pump machines were destroyed on the first day of the renewed military operation.
The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) is collaborating with personnel from the Navy, Army, and Air Force to ensure the success of “Operation Halt 2.” This joint effort demonstrates the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining.
Colonel Tenadu explained that the operation will focus on water bodies initially, with the next phase targeting forest areas. “All water bodies in the country will be covered to ensure that there is a change in the color of water,” he assured.
The operation, which started at 8 am on Thursday, will continue on Friday. However, Colonel Tenadu did not disclose the specific location of the next operation.
The “Operation Halt 2” task force aims to restore Ghana’s water bodies to their natural state. Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has polluted many water sources, posing health risks to communities.
Ghana’s environment has suffered significantly due to illegal mining activities. The government’s efforts to combat this issue have been ongoing, with “Operation Halt 2” marking a renewed commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources.
The success of “Operation Halt 2” will depend on sustained efforts and collaboration between stakeholders. GNASSM’s involvement ensures that small-scale miners operate within legal frameworks.
As the operation continues, Ghanaians can expect significant progress in the fight against illegal mining. The government’s determination to protect the environment and natural resources is a welcome step towards a more sustainable future.
