Plymouth Argyle just made a huge splash in the transfer market by signing Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidoo from Swedish club Elfsborg for a record-breaking fee.
The 25-year-old was spotted in the crowd on New Year’s Day, watching Argyle’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Bristol City, and now he’s officially a part of the team.
Baidoo has agreed to a three-and-a-half-year contract at Home Park, which is a massive coup for the club.
Plymouth Argyle’s pursuit of Michael Baidoo was a long-standing one, with the club initially attempting to secure his services during the summer transfer window.
However, Elfsborg were reluctant to let him go at the time, citing their ongoing Europa League campaign as the reason for their resistance to the move.
The Swedish side were keen to retain Baidoo’s talents as they navigated the European competition, and Argyle were forced to wait until the current transfer window to finally bring him on board.
The signing of Michael Baidoo has smashed Plymouth Argyle’s transfer record, with the fee exceeding the £1m mark that they paid for both Bali Mumba and Morgan Whittaker in the summer of 2023.
This major outlay comes on the back of a significant windfall, as the club earlier sold defender Lewis Gibson for a sum in excess of £1m, providing the funds to facilitate this high-profile acquisition.

Michael Baidoo’s impressive form in 2024 saw him score 10 goals in 27 league appearances for Elfsborg, helping the Swedish side to a seventh-place finish in the top flight.
His European exploits were equally notable, as he netted five goals in the Europa League, including a dramatic winning penalty kick against Italian heavyweights Roma in October.
With three senior international caps for Ghana already under his belt, Baidoo’s rising star is clearly one to watch.
“Michael is someone we have been aware of for a long time, and I am delighted that we have finally been able to bring him to Argyle,” head of recruitment Jim Dickinson told the club website.
“He comes to the club with excellent pedigree having been the star of Elfsborg’s Europa League campaign this season and recently made his international debut for Ghana.
“He can play a variety of positions so will add real versatility to the squad, but most of all chose to come to Argyle ahead of other top clubs throughout Europe.
“He is excited to play in England and show what he can do, and we believe he will make a real impact on English football.“
“I want to thank Simon and the board for helping us bring him to Argyle in a record deal and look forward to seeing him on the pitch very soon.”
Michael will wear the number 30 and, subject to EFL approval and International clearance, will first be available for selection for our trip to Brentford on 11 January.
Michael is sponsored by Polstar Business Solutions.
