Arsenal secured a season-long loan deal for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, announced on Saturday, after the 29-year-old England international was sidelined by Chelsea’s new manager Enzo Maresca.
Although the transfer deadline passed on Friday, Arsenal obtained a two-hour extension by submitting a deal sheet, enabling them to complete the signing of Sterling, who had made 81 appearances for Chelsea but hadn’t played this season.
Chelsea acquired Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for a potential £50 million in 2022, but new manager Enzo Maresca informed him he wouldn’t play and encouraged him to find another club.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who previously worked with Sterling at Manchester City, expressed admiration for the winger earlier this month, paving the way for the loan move.
Raheem Sterling’s arrival at Arsenal adds depth to the left wing position, where he’ll compete with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard for a starting spot.
With a decorated career spanning Liverpool and Manchester City, Sterling boasts 10 trophies, including four Premier League titles, and 82 England caps. However, he hasn’t represented England since the 2022 World Cup.
Sterling joins Arsenal as their fourth summer signing, following David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori, and Mikel Merino, bolstering the squad for the new season.
