The Government of Ghana has handed over 2,240 units of earth-moving equipment and ancillary tools to 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for road construction and rehabilitation.
This massive equipment distribution is expected to create 10,000 jobs for artisans, including auto mechanics, operators, technicians, and drivers.
The District Road Network Improvement Programme (DRIP) is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and other ministries.
At the launch, Minister Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah hailed the equipment handover as unprecedented. “This is the biggest effort ever in empowering MMDAs to maintain roads within their jurisdictions,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the equipment will significantly improve road networks, ensuring seamless mobility of goods and services.
Mr. Korsah noted that good road networks will have a ripple effect, deepening trade and accessibility to basic services.
To ensure the equipment is used effectively, the Government has established robust monitoring mechanisms.
The minister emphasized the need for cooperation among implementing partner institutions to achieve the programme’s objectives.
Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam revealed that the Government has invested over GHc10 billion in road infrastructure development since January.
“The road network is the backbone of our economy, connecting communities and facilitating trade,” he stated.
Dr. Adam said the DRIP-2024 initiative demonstrates the Government’s unwavering commitment to creating a more connected and prosperous future for all citizens.
